Overtime Victory for Chiefs Spells Loss for Sportsbooks

Share

The Kansas City Chiefs’ victory in Super Bowl LVIII came as a shock to many sportsbooks nationwide, especially after an intense game that went into overtime against the San Francisco 49ers. Despite the odds favoring the 49ers, the Chiefs, led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, clinched a 25-22 win, delivering unexpected losses to many betting operators.

Patrick Mahomes, who was pivotal in securing the win, was named MVP of Super Bowl LVIII. This outcome was particularly impactful for sportsbooks, as John Murray, SuperBook Executive Director, explained to ESPN, “The Chiefs force OT and then win, there is nothing that could’ve been worse.”

The anticipation and betting patterns changed dramatically close to the game. “The bet ticker really lit up with six-figure wagers about 12 o’clock [PT]. The big bets were on the 49ers, and the majority of the wagers were on the Chiefs,” Murray added. This shift in betting dynamics underscored the unpredictability of the game’s outcome, with the public leaning heavily towards the Chiefs.

The game’s extension into overtime was a crucial factor that swayed the results towards public bettors. The odds of the game going into overtime were pegged at 11 to 1, according to ESPN Bet, indicating a rare but lucrative opportunity for bettors. This scenario led to “lopsided action” on overtime bets, as several sportsbooks reported.

Caesars Sportsbook’s VP of Trading highlighted the impact of the game going into overtime on the betting landscape, stating to ESPN, “Overtime was bad. It was our biggest loser of the prop bets.” This sentiment was echoed by BetMGM Senior Trader Tristan Davis, who remarked, “It was a bad Super Bowl for the sportsbook, many bettors had the Chiefs winning and overs on popular player props.”
