In April, the NBA issued a lifetime ban to Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter after uncovering his involvement in illegal gambling activities. This severe penalty could effectively end Porter’s professional basketball career.
The investigation revealed Porter’s suspicious betting activities on two Raptors games, prompting an inquiry in Canada. As reported by ESPN, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) found the probe significant enough to warrant a criminal investigation. Craig Abrams, OPP’s spokesperson, confirmed the agency’s awareness of the ongoing probe led by U.S. federal authorities and stated that the OPP would coordinate with law enforcement on their own investigation.
While Porter currently faces no charges, four individuals connected to the betting activities have been charged with wire fraud. The final suspect in the NBA gambling scandal turned himself in earlier this month.
Jeff Jensen, Porter’s attorney, described his client as a “good young man with strong faith that will get him through this.” Jensen attributed Porter’s actions to a gambling addiction and emphasized that Porter is fully cooperating with law enforcement while undergoing treatment.
“He was in over his head due to a gambling addiction. He is undergoing treatment and has been fully cooperative with law enforcement,” said Jeff Jensen.
Porter continues to work with authorities, aiming to address and recover from his gambling addiction.
