Leagues Push for Sports Betting Reforms After Jontay Porter’s Lifetime Ban

In light of Jontay Porter’s lifetime suspension from the NBA due to gambling-related issues, sports leagues are reassessing the burgeoning sports betting landscape in the U.S. ESPN reports that several leagues are advocating for changes in the types of bets available on platforms and limits on certain wagers.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver issued the ban in April, a significant move for a league that was among the first to embrace betting. Silver expressed the need for more league input on betting terms. “We believe that sports leagues should have more input into the terms and types of bets offered and that further collaboration is needed among industry stakeholders regarding what is appropriate,” Silver told ESPN.

Porter’s Case Sparks Concern

Porter faced allegations of intentionally limiting his participation in games to benefit “under” bettors on his player prop bets. This incident is currently under investigation by law enforcement in both the U.S. and Canada.

Since the overturning of the federal ban on betting outside Nevada in 2018, sports leagues have formed lucrative partnerships with sportsbooks. These deals have funneled millions into various leagues, with 39 states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico now offering legalized betting. However, Porter’s case raises serious concerns about maintaining game integrity.

“Everybody is waiting for the big scandal,” Declan Hill, a professor at the University of New Haven who studies international match-fixing, told ESPN. “One of the leagues is going to be hit by some enormous scandal.”

The NBA is in talks with its betting partners—FanDuel, DraftKings, and BetMGM—about restricting certain types of bets. They are considering banning props on players in two-way contracts with the league and the G-League, who, like Porter, might be more vulnerable to financial temptations due to lower salaries.

The NHL and NFL have also requested operators to eliminate bets that could be more easily manipulated. Major League Baseball (MLB) has voiced concerns over prop bets as well. Additionally, the NCAA has started asking states to ban prop bets on college athletes entirely.

Despite these concerns, those within the gaming industry argue that current protocols safeguard the integrity of the game. They claim that modern sports betting operations can track money flow on teams or players more effectively, making it harder for match-fixing and other fraudulent activities to occur undetected.

As sports betting continues to grow, balancing financial benefits with the need to protect the integrity of the game remains a critical challenge for leagues and regulators alike.
