With a number of interim licenses granted to both retail and online sports wagering operators, Kentucky is getting ready to start its regulated sports betting market. These licenses were issued by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) for a maximum of one year of operation, subject to ongoing review. The action is being taken in advance of the debut of retail sports betting in Kentucky on September 7 and the launch of internet sports betting on September 28.
Prominent internet providers are expected to flood Kentucky’s sports betting market. The first seven Internet business owners who submitted applications earlier this month were granted service provider licenses. Major brands like Bet365, BetMGM, Caesars, Circa, DraftKings, FanDuel, and Penn Sports Interactive are represented on this list. It’s noteworthy that Fanatics, which wasn’t previously on the list, also got the go-ahead to start offering online sports betting in Kentucky. Kambi was also given a service provider license by the KHRC even though Kambi was only permitted to do retail business.
Additionally, Kentucky’s racetracks and its satellite facilities were granted licenses to provide sports betting. Churchill Downs and Derby City Gaming, both in Louisville; Ellis Park in Henderson; The Mint Gaming Hall Cumberland Run in Corbin; and The Mint Gaming Hall Cumberland in Williamsburg are a few examples.
Other future sites, like as Derby City Gaming in Louisville, Ellis Park in Owensboro, and Sandy’s Gaming and Racing in Ashland, received sports wagering operator licenses.
Partnerships between online operators and physical locations in Kentucky were announced during the KHRC meeting; each racecourse was permitted to collaborate with a maximum of three online operators. Through a cooperation with Sandy’s Racing and Gaming, Bet365 and BetMGM will provide retail and mobile betting options. While Betfair will concentrate on mobile-only betting with Turfway Park, Caesars will provide retail and mobile betting with The Red Mile. For mobile betting, Penn Sports Interactive will work with Ellis Park. Circa and Cumberland Run have a partnership for mobile-only betting. With Cumberland Run in Corbin and Cumberland Run and The Mint in Cumberland for mobile betting, DraftKings will provide retail betting. Ellis Park, Turfway Park, and Oak Grove at Churchill Downs will use Kambi’s retail-only betting services.
“The countdown continues as we move closer to sports wagering with retail locations opening in just 15 days,” said Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear of the impending sports betting debut. Jonathan Rabinowitz, the chairman of the KHRC, continued, “We are excited to open sports wagering on our target date as we continue working through this careful process dedicated to wagering integrity and protecting bettors in the state of Kentucky.”
