Jockey Hayley Turner will face an inquiry by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) for a breach of betting rules. The female jockey after staking 164 bets and making a profit of £160 over a span of 18 months is said to be “devastated and deeply embarrassed.”
Turner, 34, had retired in 2015 but kept her license. The two-time winner at Group One level, Turner will face a hearing on 14 December.
According to Professional Jockeys’ Association chief executive Paul Struthers Turner made the bets with at an average stake of £18.62 and returned to racing on a more regular basis earlier this year. He added that she had retained the license to be a part of invitational events and “no longer saw herself as a jockey”. She has been co-operative and has been transparent about it.
Since the charges, Turner has become something of a ‘golden girl’ in what is perceived as a male-dominated sport. The joint champion apprentice jockey, Turner is the first female rider in Britain to have 100 successes in a year along with two Group One race wins in 2011.
