Michigan bettors kept sportsbooks busy in May, but operators did not keep much of the action. Handle climbed from last year, while adjusted gross receipts fell to the lowest level since September 2025.

Good To Know

  • Michigan sportsbooks accepted $457.6 million in May wagers, up 18.5% from last year.
  • Adjusted gross receipts fell 34.6% year over year to $23.3 million.
  • Michigan iGaming tax revenue has now passed $3 billion since the market launched in January 2021.

Low Hold Cuts Into Michigan Sportsbook Revenue

Michigan sports betting volume remained high in May, helped by the NBA playoffs, NHL playoffs and a full MLB schedule. The month lacked March Madness, the NFL and college football, but bettors still wagered $457.6 million across online and retail sportsbooks.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board reported that May handle beat the $386.1 million posted in May 2025 by 18.5%. Compared with April, handle dipped only 0.7%.

Revenue told a rougher story for operators. Sportsbooks generated $23.3 million in adjusted gross receipts, down from $35.6 million one year earlier. That 34.6% decline came as the market posted a 5.1% hold, below both May 2025 and April 2026.

The lower win rate limited tax collections as well. Operators paid $2.7 million in online sports betting taxes to Michigan, plus $839,168.27 in wagering taxes and municipal service fees to Detroit.

FanDuel Leads As Fanatics Keeps Closing Ground

FanDuel stayed in first place with $131 million in handle and $16.8 million in adjusted gross receipts. Both totals fell from last year, with handle down 6.1% and AGR down 2.5%.

DraftKings delivered the strongest top tier growth. It handled $121.5 million, up 12.3% year over year, and generated $11.3 million in AGR, up 22.2% from May 2025.

BetMGM ranked third with $45.3 million in wagers and $4.5 million in AGR. Those figures fell 17.2% and 10.7% year over year.

Fanatics continued to gain ground in Michigan. The operator reported $38.8 million in handle, up 26.3% year over year. AGR reached $2.9 million, a 225.9% increase from May 2025.

Caesars followed with $17.9 million in handle, down 38.4%, but AGR rose 17.6% to $1.3 million. theScore Bet rounded out the top six with $12.1 million in handle and $915,537.28 in AGR, down 23.3% and 48.8% year over year.

iGaming Drives Tax Milestone

Michigan online casinos had a much stronger month than sportsbooks. iGaming operators produced $293.5 million in adjusted gross receipts, up 24.2% year over year and 0.8% from April.

Gross iGaming receipts reached $305.8 million, the third highest monthly total in Michigan market history. Online casino operators paid $75.3 million in taxes and fees to the state and Detroit.

That May contribution lifted lifetime Michigan iGaming tax revenue past $3 billion since legal online casino play began in January 2021.
