Epic Risk Management and the Entain Foundation US, the charitable arm of Entain, have teamed up to launch an educational program aimed at informing Major League Soccer (MLS) players about the potential harm associated with gambling.
The partners will be working closely with the Major League Soccer Players Association (MLSPA), the organization that represents MLS players for collective bargaining. This comprehensive three-year program will incorporate tailor-made gambling harm education and awareness programs, as well as provide advisory resources.
Epic Risk Management will take the lead in presenting prevention education and awareness workshops related to gambling harm. In addition, the organization will extend its preventative resources, advisory services, and content to the whole MLSPA membership.
The MLS is composed of 29 teams, including 26 in the United States and three in Canada. The league is set to grow in the 2025 season with the introduction of a new team in San Diego, California, bringing the total to 30.
The education aspect of this program is paramount, as outlined by Ben McGregor, Epic’s director of sports partnerships. He highlighted the increasingly intertwined relationship between wagering and professional sports in the United States, making education and advice essential.
Expressing the significance of the partnership, Martin Lycka, Senior Vice President for American Regulatory Affairs and Responsible Gambling at Entain, emphasized the ongoing surge in the popularity of sports betting across the country and the consequent need for widespread education of athletes and the general public.
Adding to this sentiment, MLSPA Chief Operating Officer Dan Jones said, “This partnership will enhance our ability to educate and equip our player pool as the presence and inherent risks of sports betting continue to evolve and permeate players’ lives.”
The partnership isn’t a first for Epic and Entain Foundation US. Last year, they collaborated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in a similar educational initiative and have also worked with the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA). Epic is also responsible for internal staff trainings within the Entain Group of companies.
