DC Sports Betting Sets New Records with Over $65 Million in October Handle

According to the Office of Lottery and Gaming’s (OLG) most recent statistics, the District of Columbia’s sports betting market is still setting records, with a handle of around $65.8 million for October 2024. After making significant increases in August and September, DC has now surpassed its previous betting high for the third consecutive month. Growing interest in the city’s authorized sports betting sector is reflected in the increase in handle.

FanDuel Dominates October’s Sports Wagering

FanDuel was the clear leader in October, accounting for more than half of the total monthly handle. Players placed over $37 million in bets through the platform, contributing significantly to the city’s record-breaking performance. Following FanDuel, DraftKings and BetMGM secured the second and third positions, with $16 million and $5.9 million in wagers, respectively. Caesars closely followed with $5 million in October handle.

One notable development is the entry of Fanatics into the DC sports betting scene. In its first full month of operation, the new operator generated nearly $2.2 million in wagers, signaling a strong start as it joined the growing list of available platforms.

Gross gaming revenue in the city reached $6.6 million for October, showing steady growth. In response to the expanding market, the DC city council approved a budget earlier this summer to facilitate the arrival of additional operators. This approval has paved the way for more competition and options for players, which seems to be positively impacting the betting market.

In collaboration with the DC Lottery, FanDuel was the only mobile sports betting site accessible in the district prior to the middle of July. New operators have subsequently entered the market, though, including DraftKings, BetMGM, and Caesars. The first full month of business for these newcomers was August 2024, which contributed to even greater wagering volumes.

DC’s expanding market is a component of a larger national trend. A statewide change in the sports gambling scene may be seen in the 38 states that have allowed and regulated sports betting since the Supreme Court’s 2018 ruling to invalidate PASPA.
