The Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling is facing challenges as calls to its hotline surge, driven by the recent legalization of sports betting in the state. Since sports betting became legal in December, Florida residents have eagerly participated in placing bets, notably during the Super Bowl, marking a significant increase in gambling activity.
According to a report by WFLX, the hotline has experienced difficulty keeping up with the growing demand for assistance from individuals struggling with gambling addiction. This uptick in calls was anticipated by the council, given the expansion of sports betting opportunities. Predictions for the current fiscal year suggest the hotline might receive as many as 40,000 calls, a steep rise from the nearly 26,000 calls documented last year. Notably, a significant portion of these calls comes from young adult men.
Jennifer Kruse, the Executive Director of the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling, emphasized the organization’s commitment to supporting individuals in need, despite the increasing pressures on their resources. She acknowledged the potential for challenges in maintaining availability due to the spike in call volume. “I don’t to date know of an issue where we have not responded to somebody in need of help. I can’t tell you that that’s always going to be the case. You know, we’re just now starting the tip of the iceberg in terms of those volume increases,” Kruse stated.
