Billy Walters: Master of the Bet Shares Secrets on WEDU Podcast

Share

Legendary sports bettor Billy Walters recently shared his extensive knowledge and strategies in sports betting on the WEDU podcast hosted by Lance Armstrong. Walters, known for his controversial betting career, discussed his latest autobiography ‘Gambler: Secrets from a Life at Risk,’ that was released in August this year, highlighting his the nuances of (his) betting world, offering valuable insights for both novice and experienced bettors.

Walters highlighted that betting on less popular sports can be advantageous due to oddsmakers’ limited knowledge in these areas, making them more susceptible to being outwitted. However, he noted the impracticality of placing large bets in these lesser-known sports. Walters pointed out that for major sports like basketball and football, college basketball presents the best betting opportunities, particularly in the first 60 days of the season, as oddsmakers often struggle with teams from varied conferences.

Look for Value

“What you’re looking for is is an advantage over the bookmakers. You’re looking for value. Winning over a long period of time is next to impossible [but] some sports are probably easier to beat than other sports. [There] are obscure sports that odds makers don’t know a lot about and they are the easiest ones you can bet on”.

He emphasized the complexities involved in college sports betting, such as the number of teams, player and coach dynamics, and the impact of injuries, all of which create unique betting opportunities. “When doing your research right, you could have an edge, however it is so much work, he said.”

“College sports are definitely good. I think there’s more opportunity with them and the reason is like college football there’s 130 teams. You’ve got coaches you’ve got players. Things are changing I mean almost daily okay so you got to be able to stay on top of that. Know what’s the worth of each player or how does this coach affect this particular team once the season starts. Almost everyone’s playing injured and how’s that going to affect their play. If a guy’s out what’s his backup worth right okay how is that going to affect the outcome of the game. So yeah, there’s a lot of work and staying on top of that and keeping it right.”

Walters’ approach to handicapping sports is comprehensive, taking into account factors like travel time, weather, turf conditions, and temperature. He shared that this methodology is detailed in his book, which covers both basic and advanced betting strategies.

Walters also reflected on his collaboration with multiple handicappers throughout his career, continually updating strategies to stay ahead in the ever-evolving world of sports betting. He compared the challenges of sports betting with the stock market, underscoring the former’s heightened difficulty.

In a particularly enlightening segment, Walters discussed how skilled bookmakers could leverage information from seasoned bettors. He cited his friend Jack Benan, who used Walters’ bets at his sportsbook to refine betting lines and balance actions. This mutually beneficial relationship, according to Walters, stands in contrast to less adept bookmakers who reject bets from experienced bettors, which he views as a lack of professional competence.

Legal Issues

Walters then spoke of his legal struggles with federal authorities. His troubles began in January 1985 when he was part of a computer group, leading to simultaneous raids across the U.S. under the suspicion of organized bookmaking. Despite this, his first indictment came five years later, not for bookmaking but for conspiracy to bet in Las Vegas. In 1992, he, his wife, and 12 others were exonerated in federal court, marking the end of that case but not his legal challenges.

“I got indicted for a conspiracy to bet believe it or not in all places the gaming capital of the World Las Vegas Nevada I got indicted for being part of a criminal conspiracy conspiring to bet. I went to federal court in 1992 along with my wife and 12 others where we were exonerated.”

Walters has faced three additional indictments from the state’s attorney general for betting-related charges, but each case was dismissed. From 1985 to 2016, he and his family, along with their employees, lived under the constant pressure of investigations or actions from either the federal government or the state’s attorney general, making it a challenging period for them.

Walters praised Circa, a sportsbook in downtown Las Vegas, for its openness to all bettors and its capability to manage substantial bets. He criticized other sportsbooks that ban consistent winners, suggesting these establishments need a change in management for better operational efficiency.

Walters discussed his conviction and sentencing for insider trading, which led to a five-year prison term and a $10 million fine. At 71 years old, he was found guilty on 10 counts of conspiracy and fraud in April, stemming from receiving unlawful stock tips from the ex-chairman of Dean Foods. The government stated that this illicit activity spanned over six years, resulting in gains of more than $40 million for Walters.

About his time in Prison

Before going to prison, Walters was dealing with family issues. His eldest son, who is severely handicapped, was having major health problems. Considering his age at the time, he was left with the uncertainty of whether he would see his son again. Additionally, his daughter was struggling with opioid addiction, a situation he had been actively managing but knew he would be unable to continue addressing from prison.

Upon entering federal prison at 71 years old, he was separated from his wife of 41 years and his family, starting a new phase of life under challenging conditions. Walters felt the five-year sentence could potentially have been equivalent to a life sentence.

Noting took some positives from his time in prison, noting that perhaps the only positive outcome from his time in prison was the opportunity to mentor about two dozen men, providing guidance and support during their incarceration.

“Being sent to five years in prison which at my age very well could have been life. Yeah there was only one positive thing that came out of that entire experience was I end up mentoring about two dozen men in there.”
