In an unexpected move, the regulating body of a major sporting event, the Women’s World Cup, has entered into a sponsorship agreement with TAB, New Zealand’s sports gambling monopoly. The partnership, revealed on Monday, represents a significant shift in the organization’s approach, as it is the first time they have collaborated for sponsorship with a gambling firm. The agreement includes the 2018 Women’s World Cup, which will be contested in New Zealand from July 20 to August 20, and will include TAB signs and branding prominently in all four host stadiums.

The Women’s World Cup has grown in prominence in recent years, with increased athlete involvement and noticeable improvements in performance. The event, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, comes after the Men’s World Cup in Qatar in 2022. The preceding men’s tournament saw the Betano brand promoted, primarily to the European market. While no financial specifics about the TAB arrangement were announced, FIFA and UEFA have been actively pursuing similar sponsorship partnerships as a means of securing revenue for their tournaments.

While worldwide football organizations welcome these types of collaborations due to the considerable financial benefits they provide, local guardians of the sport have taken a different attitude. The Premier League, the top-tier football league in the United Kingdom, for example, has decided to phase out jersey sponsorships by 2025/2026. Although this deadline is subject to change, many clubs have already started looking for last-minute partnerships with sports betting providers in order to stay inside the projected schedule.

Stake and Chelsea have recently struck sponsorship arrangements with sports gambling firms, taking advantage of the present sponsorship laws. It is crucial to highlight that, despite criticism from certain fans, clubs are motivated by obtaining the greatest financial conditions for their sponsorships. Aston Villa and BK8 have also formed a similar agreement. The enormous disparity between prize payouts supplied by traditional non-gambling sponsors and those offered by sports betting companies is one of the key drivers pushing these arrangements.
