Vote on Gambling Sponsorship Ban delayed by Premier League Clubs

Share

The English Premier League has delayed a scheduled vote on a voluntary ban on shirt sponsorships by gambling companies.

As reported by local media, the recent political crisis in Westminster after Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s resignation, is affecting industry reforms.

Citing sources familiar to the matter, BBC broke the news that the Premier League is looking for support of the clubs to initiate a voluntary ban.

The proposal would include a voluntary prohibition to come into effect at the start of the 2022/2023 season, with betting companies to disappear from teams’ shirts within the next three years. Existing deals expiring no later than the 2024-2025 season, would be allowed to continue.

The matter is of importance for the Premier League clubs as revenue from the gambling sector is a good piece of their budgets. Half of football clubs were sponsored by betting operators in the 2021-2022 season.

It is said that Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are the ones in favor of a voluntary ban, a decision made easy since none has existing shirt sponsorship deals with gambling firms.

For the approval of the ban, 14 clubs out the 20 EPL clubs are required to vote in favor.

The proposed ban will now be up for discussion at a previously scheduled meeting on July 26.
