Following the recent announcements of new jersey sponsorship agreements involving three Premier League clubs and betting businesses, there have been calls for government involvement. Burnley and Fulham signed one-year contracts with W88 and SBOTOP, respectively, while Aston Villa signed a three-year deal with BK8. With mounting concerns about the effect of gambling in football, protest group The Big Step is calling the UK government to step in and end these collaborations.
Despite the Premier League clubs’ unanimous vote in April to remove gambling sponsorships from the front of matchday shirts by the 2025-26 season, clubs can still show betting logos until the new regulation takes effect. Chelsea is apparently seeking a year-long commitment with Stake in addition to the recent agreements. The Big Step campaign, which is dedicated to stopping gambling advertising and sponsorship in sports, vehemently condemned these transactions and demanded that the government intervene to put an end to them.
The Big Step campaign voiced dissatisfaction with the football industry’s handling of gambling-related issues, accusing teams of encouraging addiction and death while also discussing mental health. According to BBC Sport, the group’s statement underlined the discrepancy between football’s ostensible concern for mental health and its support of sponsorship deals with online casinos. They said that young players and spectators are being used as walking billboards for companies that promote unhealthy addictive behaviors.
In response to the campaign group’s criticism, the Premier League notified BBC Sport that it was the first sports league in the UK to take proactive steps to reduce gambling advertising. The league emphasized that all of the clubs’ gambling partners are regulated and licensed by the Gambling Commission, assuring conformity with the Advertising Standards Authority’s guidelines.
W88, the new sponsor of Burnley and Fulham, and previously of Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, and Wolverhampton Wanderers, has a history of working with football clubs. SBOTOP has also had a long-standing business tie with Leeds United. Notably, Cazoo, a vehicle sales firm, formerly sponsored Aston Villa, while Classic Football Shirts sponsored Burnley last season.
The clubs participating in the recent sponsorship arrangements argue that such partnerships are critical to their long-term success. Fulham stressed the importance of their record agreement with SBOTOP, stating that it will be critical in sustaining the club’s competitiveness. Burnley mirrored this view, emphasizing that the sponsorship cash would assist the club remain competitive in the Premier League.
Eight Premier League clubs had gambling businesses emblazoned on the front of their shirts during the 2022-23 season, providing an estimated £60 million ($75.7 million) annually. The financial value of these sponsorships cannot be overstated, but there are still concerns about the possible impact of gambling-related advertising on vulnerable persons and the overall integrity of the sport.
