The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) has imposed a $10,000 fine and a suspended four-month ban on former top-10 tennis player Philippoussis. The action was taken after he breached the rules by accepting payment for providing a voiceover for promotional content of a gaming operator.
The ITIA, an independent body overseeing the integrity of professional tennis globally, enforces the regulations set out in the Tennis Anti-Corruption Programme. As an accredited coach, Philippoussis falls under the category of a “covered person,” making him subject to the sport’s strict regulations regarding associations with betting operators.
The rules explicitly state that “no covered person shall directly or indirectly, facilitate, encourage, and/or promote tennis betting.” Failure to adhere to these guidelines can result in penalties to maintain the sport’s integrity and avoid potential conflicts of interest.
While Philippoussis did not contest the charge brought against him, he cooperated fully with the ITIA during the investigation. The imposed suspension will remain inactive unless there is another breach of the rules. This measure serves as a warning to all accredited individuals in the tennis community, reminding them of the importance of abiding by the anti-corruption regulations to maintain the sport’s credibility.
Karen Moorhouse, CEO of the ITIA, emphasized that the case did not involve corruption but rather a rule violation. She highlighted the significance of educating players, coaches, and other accredited individuals about the regulations, especially those related to commercial relationships with betting companies. Preventing potential breaches and maintaining transparency are the ITIA’s preferred approaches to preserving the integrity of the sport.
Moorhouse encouraged players and other tennis stakeholders to seek clarification from the ITIA on any rules or potential commercial arrangements to avoid inadvertent violations and protect the sport’s reputation.
