A new survey conducted by YouGov on behalf of Online Betting Guide (OLBG) has revealed that over one in five (22%) Brits are planning to place a bet on this year’s Grand National horse race, which is set to take place on April 15. The survey was conducted among 2,061 adults across the United Kingdom to assess their plans for Britain’s biggest horse race.
Interestingly, a higher proportion of men (26%) than women (18%) said that they would bet on the race. Furthermore, 9% of respondents indicated that this would be their only horse racing bet of the year, suggesting that many people see the Grand National as a one-off betting opportunity.
The survey also explored the preferred betting methods of respondents, and 53% of those planning to bet on the Grand National said they would do so online, while only 11% were planning to bet in person at the track. The majority of respondents (63%) said they mostly bet online, suggesting that online betting is the preferred method for most people.
Despite some recent reports suggesting that some people were betting in person or in cash to avoid affordability checks, the majority of those planning to bet on the Grand National intend to do so online. This is a positive sign for the industry, which is keen to position itself as a form of entertainment.
It is also worth noting that 11% of respondents said they viewed betting as similar to other forms of entertainment, such as going to the cinema. This suggests that many people see gambling as a leisure activity rather than a problem or addiction.
Overall, the survey findings are good news for the gambling industry, which is set for a bumper weekend as the Grand National attracts plenty of recreational players. However, the cost of attending major racing events such as the Grand National and Cheltenham has come under scrutiny, with only 2% of respondents believing that £85 for a ticket to Aintree represented good value for money.
