According to the Ohio Control Commission’s December sports betting revenue report, there was a notable drop from November. Ohio’s total revenue from sports betting in December was $55.5 million, almost half of what the state made in November.
With over $56.6 million in sales, the state’s online sports betting industry did better. Retail establishments, on the other hand, experienced a decline and reported losing more than $1.1 million. The sports betting industry in Ohio is still very active, even with the decline in December’s results. Since the Supreme Court overturned the countrywide ban in 2018, Ohio’s performance is indicative of the expanding sports betting scene in the United States, where 38 states and the District of Columbia now allow legal sports betting.
In 2023, Ohio made $899 million from sports betting, almost $35 million less than the year before. A closer examination of the numbers reveals that, with $882.9 million in total revenue, online betting is still the industry leader. In contrast, retail betting generated somewhat more than $16.4 Million.
Despite December’s dip, Ohio hit a significant milestone in November when the state surpassed a $1 billion sports betting handle for the second time in its history. The handle reached $1.03 billion, marking a 19% increase compared to the same period the previous year. This record-setting month reflected a growing demand for sports betting in the state.
Ohio’s casinos also showed mixed results in December. Total casino revenue for the month exceeded $89.1 million, reflecting a slight decline from the previous November’s total of $91.7 million. However, the state saw an increase from the month prior, with casino revenue rising nearly $5 million from November’s $84.3 million.
Slot machines contributed significantly to the December casino earnings, generating $63.8 million, while table games added $25.3 million to the total. For the fiscal year, Ohio’s casinos have generated more than $1 billion in total revenue. Slot revenue alone reached $732.7 million, with table games adding over $276 million to the total.
