For the state’s fledgling online sports betting sector, the recent explosion in mobile betting activity in North Carolina has exceeded all expectations. A startling 5.4 million location checks were logged from 370,000 active users between March 11 and March 13 at midday, according to geolocation expert GeoComply. The two million checks from 134,000 active accounts that were written on the first two days of live betting in nearby Virginia in 2021 pale in comparison to this amount. It’s important to remember that Virginia has a population of 8.8 million, whereas North Carolina has 10.8 million.
This amazing rise has been sparked by the regulators in North Carolina, who on March 11th launched eight digital platforms for statewide mobile betting. It’s interesting to note that the majority of location checks came from accounts located in the state’s center, where big cities like Raleigh-Durham, Charlotte, Winston-Salem, and Greensboro make an obvious upside-down “U” shape on a map.
This region, which is well-known for its intense love of college basketball, has become a hub for mobile gambling. There is an obvious passion for college basketball in the area, especially with Duke at number eleven and North Carolina at number four in the AP Top 25.
With March Madness approaching, the timing of North Carolina’s entry into the world of online sports betting couldn’t be more ideal. The state’s advancement was welcomed by Lindsay Slader, SVP of Compliance at GeoComply, who said, “It’s early, but North Carolina is already delivering on lawmaker expectations when they legalized online sports betting last year.”
Slader emphasized the state’s methodical approach to mobile sports betting and how it can protect consumers while opening up large income streams. The enthusiasm surrounding the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, which is scheduled to begin this weekend with Selection Sunday and the first tournament games on March 19, is in fact perfectly timed with the advent of online sports betting.
