The Michigan Lawmakers passed a legislation for regulating online casino games and sports betting within the state on Tuesday.
H4926, the online gambling bill moved to the senate after a majority of the legislators voted in favour of it (68-40).
The state’s tribal and commercial casinos could now bring their games to the cyberspace.
The Detroit News reported that the legislation is most likely to be considered by the Senate. Earlier also Michigan has been close to legalizing online betting, but proposals could not gain enough traction last year.
The man who has been spearheading the efforts, Republic State Rep. Iden had told in an interview last year that he was optimistic about the bill in 2017.
But, the efforts got delayed owing to the complexities of the state’s existing gambling industry.
“We are aware that people prefer gaming on the internet in Michigan. In fact whenever I go and talk to the students who study in a nearby university they tell me that they like playing poker online and they don’t realize that it is not legal in the state,” Iden said.
Hopefully they would implement it in 2018 as they mull for regulating and taxing the games.
“The desire to enact a nationwide ban on internet gambling is waning at the federal level,” said a House analysis of the legislation.
