Massachusetts opened 2026 with another strong month for sports wagering activity, according to data released by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission.
Good to Know
Sportsbooks across Massachusetts generated $808.9 million in wagers during January, extending a run of high activity that began late in 2025. Betting volume increased 6.1 percent compared with January of the previous year, supported by the NFL postseason, College Football Playoff games, and a full calendar of NBA and NHL matchups.
Revenue moved in the opposite direction. Operators reported $84.4 million in total revenue, a decline of 12.6 percent year over year despite the higher handle. Mobile betting continued to dominate the market, producing more than $84 million in revenue from $797.1 million in wagers.
The statewide hold landed at 10.4 percent, marking a third consecutive month above 10 percent. That figure still fell short of the 12.6 percent recorded in January of last year, which stood as the highest monthly win rate during 2025.
Taxable revenue reached $82.4 million and delivered $16.5 million in tax contributions. The state collected nearly $84 million in total sportsbook taxes during the previous calendar year.
Retail locations had limited impact on results. In person sportsbooks combined for only $332,537 in revenue from an $11.8 million handle, pulling down the overall performance. Encore Boston Harbor stood out as the only retail operator among three locations to post a hold above 3 percent, while also generating a market leading $5.8 million retail handle.
DraftKings continued to control the largest share of online wagering in Massachusetts, processing $418.3 million in bets during January. Gross revenue reached $45.8 million on an 11 percent hold, though that total dropped from $53.4 million recorded in December.
FanDuel ranked second with nearly $200 million in wagers and delivered a stronger 11.9 percent hold, yet volume remained far behind the market leader.
Fanatics held third position with a $62.5 million handle and $5.8 million in revenue, supported by a 9.3 percent hold. BetMGM followed with $57 million in wagers and an 8.2 percent return.
Caesars generated $31.1 million in handle but failed to reach a 6 percent hold. theScore Bet recorded $22.7 million in wagers with an 8.4 percent hold, while Bally Bet produced a 9.3 percent hold from $5.8 million in betting volume.
