Federal prosecutors have officially stepped back from investigating NBA guard Malik Beasley over alleged gambling activity, giving the free agent a chance to reset his career. His attorneys confirmed that following “extensive meetings” with the Eastern District of New York, Beasley is no longer a target in the case.
Good to know
The news ends months of speculation that had hung over Beasley since June, when reports first linked him to unusual betting activity tied to the 2023-24 season. While the story cast doubt on his future, federal prosecutors never filed charges.
Attorney Steve Haney told ESPN:
“Months after this investigation commenced, Malik remains uncharged and is not the target of this investigation. An allegation with no charge, indictment, or conviction should never have the catastrophic consequence this has caused Malik. This has literally been the opposite of the presumption of innocence.”
The investigation started after a sportsbook flagged heavy action on one of Beasley’s player props in January 2024. Betting on his rebound line, set at 2.5, shifted dramatically when money poured in on the under. Oddsmakers moved the line from +120 to -250 before tipoff against Portland. Beasley went on to grab six rebounds, easily covering the number and leaving the unusual wagers as losers.
That flagged game brought federal attention, though no evidence ever linked Beasley to placing bets himself. Still, the cloud of suspicion disrupted his free agency. He had been negotiating a three-year, $42 million deal with the Detroit Pistons after a strong season, but talks stalled once the probe became public.
Beasley averaged 11.3 points per game and logged a career-high 77 starts for the Milwaukee Bucks in 2023-24. The following year, on a one-year deal with the Pistons, he boosted his scoring average to more than 16 points per game. Insiders say his return to Detroit remains possible now that his name has been cleared, and other franchises may renew interest.
The 27-year-old recently posted a Snapchat update reflecting on the last few months:
“People were saying some crazy things in the media … people judging me,” he wrote. “I’ll tell you one thing, I have a chip on my shoulder. I’m ready to destroy anybody in front of me. I’m ready to prove again I belong in this league.”
