Governor Andy Beshear spent $20 at Churchill Downs, site of the legendary Kentucky Derby, to celebrate the beginning of legal sports wagering in Kentucky. The Democratic governor’s wager, which includes a parlay on the University of Kentucky and University of Louisville football teams outperforming oddsmakers, marks the start of legal sports betting in Kentucky, just in time for the NFL regular season.
Beshear emphasized sports betting’s entertainment value and its potential to enhance tourism, guaranteeing that Kentuckians do not fly to Las Vegas for NCAA tournament rounds.
The governor’s wager has a twist: it also expects Duke, a long-standing basketball foe of both Kentucky and Louisville, to win fewer football games this season than predicted.
Any wins from these first-ever sports wagers will be donated to the Louisville Sports Commission.
On the same day, sports wagering facilities opened in other sections of the state, marking the start of the rollout. Damon Thayer, the Kentucky State Senate Majority Floor Leader and a prominent supporter of sports betting legislation, put his own wager at a Lexington facility.
Mobile betting, which would allow internet smartphone betting, is set to begin later this month.
The business is estimated to earn $23 million in yearly revenue for the state, with the majority of the proceeds going to Kentucky’s public pension system. This action also ends money outflows to other states where Kentucky citizens previously bet on sports.
The legalization of sports betting came after a protracted political battle. Kentucky’s Republican-controlled Legislature passed the bill in late March, during the final hours of its annual session, with Beshear quickly signing it into law.
Critics of sports betting argue that it is an addictive form of gambling that will negatively impact Kentucky families. A small percentage of sports wagering tax revenue will be directed toward a fund to combat problem gambling.
The U.S. Supreme Court paved the way for legalized sports betting five years ago, with nearly three-fourths of U.S. states subsequently embracing the practice.
Horse racing wagering is a longstanding tradition in Kentucky, which proudly dubs itself the world’s horse capital. In recent years, the state’s horse tracks have also embraced another form of gambling with historical horse racing machines, allowing individuals to bet on randomly generated past horse races.
Now, Kentucky is introducing sports betting at racetracks and track-affiliated venues.
Governor Beshear, who has championed sports betting legalization during his term, is positioned to potentially benefit politically from this achievement. He has cited the passage of sports betting legislation in his bid for a second term. Beshear faces a reelection challenge from Republican Attorney General Daniel Cameron, whose campaign has sought to minimize the governor’s role in this achievement, attributing it to the legislature.
Governor Beshear maintains that his office collaborated closely with lawmakers on the legislation and urged all to appreciate the historic moment without playing politics.
