Georgia Contemplates Online Sports Betting

The prospect of allowing internet sports betting in Georgia is once again in the balance as legislative wheels whirl. Anticipating a reopening of this divisive topic in the forthcoming legislative session, the Georgia House Economic Development and Tourism Committee is igniting new debates on the possible growth of gaming in the state.

State Representative Ron Stephens (R) of Savannah, who chairs the House, notes the substantial advancements in technology since earlier attempts to draft legislation pertaining to sports gambling. “These things (gesturing with a smartphone) weren’t even invented way back at the time whenever we started the gaming scenario,” recognizes Stephens. He emphasizes the rising demand for increased fan interaction from big league clubs, particularly in baseball and football.

A Question of Time and Public Will

“It’s a time that we need to just ask the folks if this is what they want,” Stephens says, posing a fundamental query. Georgia considers whether it’s time to change its position on gambling laws as other states accept online sports betting. The potential economic rewards of regulated online sports betting combined with changing views may give the unsuccessful initiatives of earlier years a fresh lease of life.

Although there have been several unsuccessful attempts to increase gambling in Georgia, the situation is changing. Stephens highlights that conventional brick-and-mortar enterprises are not what the state is looking for. Rather, the Georgia Lottery is leading the charge in the smooth integration of online sports betting within the current framework.

The goal of legislators is to go cautiously through the legislative system. If authorized, the Georgia Lottery would regulate sports betting online, limiting access to those who are physically located in the state and at least 21 years old. “The truth is, it’s just another lottery game,” explains Stephens. The plan seeks to raise an additional $100 million, which would be used for crucial initiatives like pre-K programs and the HOPE scholarship.
