Having an iconic wide attacking style with various rotations, West Ham is one of the well-recognized English clubs. But do you know what has led the club to such prominence? It has a rich history behind, taking us back to the 19th century. And today’s article will grab you by the hand and guide you through the most vital WH past periods.
But before we dive into the annals of history, how well do you think you know what your favortie club is capable of right now? GG.Bet lets every Polish fan test their predicting skills, giving you some zloty in reward. Will you try?
Like many football clubs, WH originates from a formation of workers. It was founded by Arnold Hills, the director of the Thames Ironworks shipyard department in London.
The idea of creating a club wasn’t about attending events and winning cash. Arnold instead aimed to improve the relations between the management and the workers. He knew that the sport is a hell of a uniting force.
Even today, you can see the club’s origins. Their crest crossed hummer symbolizes shipyard workers very distinctively.
Since Thames Ironworks was established, the club has joined various amateur events. Their first significant win got them at their start. They won a West Ham Charity Cup in 1885 featuring all the best local teams.
Two years later, the club got their skills together and won the London League. This has put them on a professional road, making them join a Southern League. Soon after, they were turned into a First Division team.
At these times, the team’s uniform was dark blue. Some say it was inspired by the Oxford University “Blue,” reward issued to the best sportsman. However, the team changed their outfits later in the light blue jerseys and white shorts.
In June 1900, Thames Ironworks was disbanded due to the arguments regarding financing and running the club. But such a prominent team couldn’t just fall apart. So it was quickly reunited under the common name: West Ham F.C.
In 1901, WH played in two leagues at once. The first was their classic Southern Division, but they have joined a Western League. They’ve found great success in the Western League, defeating Fulham (champions) and becoming absolute Western champions.
The team played in Memorial Grounds but later moved to the Boleyn Ground stadium. There was nothing too memorable until WW1 started. It has postponed a team’s activity.
In 1919 the team returned to their regular routine, joining the Football League and becoming a second division. Showing good results, four years later, WH got promoted to the first division.
At that time, West Ham attended a legendary event, FA Cup, climbing to the final. But sadly, they were defeated by the Bolton Wanderers at the Wembley Stadium.
The glory wouldn’t come to West Ham for 30 years. But the tables turned when Ted Fenton became its manager. That has made a historic change to the WH: the introduction of the integral club’s youth school.
This has allowed West Ham to raise younger football generations, which was a long-term play. But it has paid out massively. Have you heard about the legendary Bobby Moore, an icon of his football era? This player is one of those who came out of the WH youth.
But the biggest harvest from the youth was collected in the 1960s. WH has got their first significant award winning Preston North End in the FA Cup final. The following year, the team climbed to the finals of the Cup Winners’ Cup, where they destroyed Munich 2:0.
But their biggest time was in the 1970s. That’s when West Ham won two FA Cups in 1975 and 1980, becoming one of the best teams of this time. But sadly, the team has experienced a decline since those days.
Still, West Ham fans think the team is one of the most consistent English clubs. And the fact that WH has never been transitioned to the third division attests to that.
Since West Ham entered the Premier League, it has faced quite disenchanting results. The team had many talents like Frank Lampard and Joe Cole. They allowed WH to stay in the middle of the leaderboards, showing their famous consistency.
But later, these prominent players were noticed by other club managers. From 2002 to 2003, they bought them, leaving WH without notable footballers. With their successes big sponsorship deals entered, among those are big iGaming operators such as betway in 2015.
Still, West Ham has stabilized its forces and shows solid results. It’s tough to say whether they are outsiders or favorites. The community instead calls them a “middleman.”
