An Iowa bettor has filed a lawsuit against DraftKings, claiming the sportsbook wrongly voided five parlay bets worth over $14.2 million during the 2024 Pebble Beach Pro-Am golf tournament. The dispute centers around bets placed before the final round was officially canceled due to bad weather.
Good to know
Nicholas Bavas from Dallas County, Iowa, placed five parlay bets late on February 3, 2024, predicting top finishers based on the third-round leaderboard. His picks included Wyndham Clark, who led after 54 holes. Bavas anticipated the final round would be canceled due to rain, and he bet accordingly.
His hunch was right. On February 4, the PGA Tour postponed play several times before officially ending the tournament that evening. The third-round results stood as final, confirming Clark as the winner.
Despite the accurate prediction, DraftKings voided Bavas’ bets and refunded his stakes. The sportsbook cited its terms, which state that any “futures bets” placed after the final completed shot—if that round becomes the last—are void.
Bavas is now challenging that classification. His lawsuit claims the bets involved multiple finishing positions and should not count as standard futures. He also argues that if part of a parlay was void, the rest should have been recalculated and paid.
His complaint accuses DraftKings and its local operator, Crown IA Gaming, of breach of contract and violating consumer laws. The suit also claims the rules were changed after the tournament ended.
Attorney Ben Lynch, representing Bavas, said DraftKings applied the rules in a way that avoided a payout. “The rules that DraftKings had in place at the time of the tournament did not allow them to void the bets,” he stated.
Several other bettors who made similar predictions also reported having their bets voided and expressed frustration on social media.
