A DraftKings customer earned far more than the tournament champion after Jackson Koivun won the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities. The sportsbook paid $4,000,002.66 on a long shot wager placed before the event.
Good to Know
Koivun collected the biggest prize of his young golf career in Minnesota. However, an unnamed DraftKings bettor gained about 2.5 times more from the same result.
DraftKings confirmed a total return of $4,000,002.66. Odds of +3700 equal a 2.6% implied chance and pay $37 in profit for every $1 wagered.
A calculation based on the final return puts the original stake near $105,263. The bet therefore generated profit of almost $3.9 million.
Koivun received $1.584 million from the $8.8 million 3M Open purse. Scottie Scheffler took $959,200 for second place.
The payout comparison gave the betting story an unusual angle. Koivun had earned only about $93,000 across his first two professional appearances before winning in Minnesota.
Koivun finished at 25 under par and beat Scheffler by three strokes. He closed with a bogey free 66 after Scheffler applied late pressure with a final round 63.
The result came in only the third professional start for the 21 year old former Auburn player. It also delivered a two year PGA Tour exemption and an invitation to the Masters.
DraftKings odds had climbed as high as +4400 during the opening round, equal to an implied chance of about 2.2%. By Sunday, Koivun had turned a low probability golf bet into one of the largest publicly reported sportsbook payouts of the event.
Other bettors targeted longer prices during the final round. DraftKings accepted $2,000 on Ben Kohles at +9600 and $250 on Emiliano Grillo at +11000. Kohles finished ninth, while Grillo shared seventh place.
The victory lifted Koivun from No. 206 to No. 73 in the Official World Golf Ranking. He also climbed 124 places to No. 70 in the FedExCup standings, placing him inside the playoff field with two regular season events remaining.
