A’s Las Vegas Stadium Ceremony Marks New MLB Chapter

A new Major League Baseball stadium is on the way to the Las Vegas Strip, and although construction already started in April, a formal ceremony held Monday morning gave the public its first official look at the project. The event included representatives from the Athletics (A’s), Major League Baseball, Nevada state officials, and local leadership.

Good to know

  • The $1.75 billion project will sit on part of the former Tropicana Las Vegas site.
  • The stadium will feature the lowest seating capacity in MLB with 33,000 seats.
  • Opening Day in 2028 is the target for completion.

The stadium will take over nine acres of the 35-acre Tropicana plot, with Bally’s Corporation giving up the space in exchange for rights to build a new casino-resort next door. Real estate investment trust Gaming and Leisure Properties (GLPI) owns the land.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, A’s owner John Fisher, and Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo each played key roles in making the project a reality. Fisher led the relocation effort, MLB gave the green light, and Lombardo secured legislative support for public funding by calling a special session in 2023.

“There are gonna be thousands of people on this site in short order,” said Fisher. Manfred added, “I would absolutely be there in 2028 to celebrate with John Fisher, his entire team, and I hope the entire state of Nevada.” Lombardo described the project as an economic opportunity and said it would help establish Las Vegas as a new entertainment powerhouse.

The stadium will hold 33,000 spectators and include a unique tiered, scalloped roof inspired by the Sydney Opera House. A large glass window in the outfield will allow Strip views while avoiding glare issues for players. Although it will be the smallest in terms of capacity among MLB venues, the location is expected to bring in strong traffic from both locals and tourists.

The relocation effort started in May 2021 when the A’s began exploring options outside Oakland. After talks to build a new stadium at Oakland’s Howard Terminal failed, the team shifted its focus to Las Vegas. At one point, plans were in place to buy land from Red Rock Resorts on the old Wild Wild West hotel site. That agreement later fell through.

Eventually, the A’s secured the Tropicana site through a partnership with Bally’s. Under the new plan, Bally’s gave up its casino operations on the site to make room for the stadium and will instead develop a new property on the remaining land.

The stadium is expected to open in time for the 2028 MLB season, officially bringing another major professional sports franchise to Las Vegas.
