By agreeing to a four-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA), the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has demonstrated its commitment to upholding football’s integrity throughout Asia. Through this agreement, attempts to spot suspicious activity surrounding football matches and abnormal betting behaviors will be strengthened.
Under this agreement, the AFC and IBIA will collaborate to monitor and detect any anomalies in betting patterns throughout Asian football. The IBIA will utilize its Monitoring and Alert Platform to provide the AFC with real-time data regarding suspicious betting activities. This proactive approach will enable the AFC to swiftly investigate any potential cases of match manipulation, thereby protecting the game’s integrity.
AFC General Counsel and Director of Legal Affairs, Mr. Andrew Mercer, emphasized the organization’s commitment to maintaining high ethical standards. He stated, “The AFC’s Vision and Mission has outlined our steadfast ambitions to uphold the highest ethical and sporting standards, and we are committed towards preserving our key tenets of fair play and integrity.” Mercer added that strong partnerships with leading organizations are crucial in the battle against match-fixing.
Khalid Ali, CEO of IBIA, expressed his enthusiasm for this collaboration, stating, “Cooperation is a vital part of any effective integrity monitoring and investigatory framework.” He highlighted the significance of information sharing in strengthening the relationship between IBIA and the AFC. By monitoring global customer account activity, which encompasses over $300 billion in sports betting annually, IBIA aims to safeguard the AFC ecosystem.
Mr. Mercer further reinforced the AFC’s dedication to integrity in the sport. He remarked, “The AFC is committed to promoting integrity, ethics, and fair play in Asian football and we are pleased to work with IBIA as we strive to enhance our capabilities to monitor and address suspicious activities, ensuring that football in Asia is safeguarded from the threats of match manipulation.”
The signing of this MoU is a landmark achievement in the ongoing fight against match-fixing in Asian football. Both organizations are dedicated to fostering a secure environment for the sport and instilling confidence among fans, players, and all stakeholders involved.
