Just a fortnight after Flutter Chairman Ian Proctor openly discussed the importance of a proactive approach in player protection and an increased focus on 'affordability', Flutter have announced the implementation of a range of new proactive measures in this field of safer gambling. The new measures are announced for Flutter’s Ireland operations and further strengthen their commitment to facilitate intervention when signs of harmful gambling behavior are identified. Flutter is intent to use 1% of their Net Gambling Revenue (NGR) to support research, education and treatment of problem gambling and this will range between EUR1.25m and 3m in the coming years. Flutter also announced to restrict the TV advertising of their Ireland brands Paddy Power, Betfair and Skybet, on all live sports before 9pm, to 5 minutes before an event and 5 minutes after. All popular events as soccer, rugby, GAA, golf, tennis, basketball and others are included with horseracing and greyhound racing events not having any restrictions. Another measure is that from early April, Flutter will ban the use of credit cards for all its online and retail customers in Ireland. The banning of credit card use is not new, in the UK use of credit card was banned by the legislator back in April of 2020. Chief Executive Officer of Flutter UK & Ireland, Conor Grant says: “There is an extensive range of safer gambling measures already in place in our Irish business and there are clear benefits if these or similar measures were to be adopted market wide in Ireland. We have not always got it right as an industry and we must ensure collectively that we are doing all we can to prevent problem gambling. The reality is that protection and promotion measures will continue to evolve over time and new measures will need to be considered to promote moderation, safety and enjoyment in this era of digital gambling.” Grant then further highlights their leading approach: “We recognise that gambling has undergone a technological transformation over the past two decades. The influence of the smartphone, social media, and on-demand streaming has been profound. We understand that legislating for these developments is complex and may take some time.” “We have decided to introduce several measures, well in advance of the legislation, to enhance the effectiveness of our safer gambling policies in Ireland.”
