Netherlands Gaming Authority Reports Alarming Drop in Match-Fixing Alerts

Share

The match-fixing report for 2023 was released by the Netherlands Gaming Authority (KSA), which noted an alarming 85% decline in reported suspicious activity pertaining to sporting events.

The KSA does not see the steep reduction as a sign of improvement, even though licensed operators reported just six possible match-fixing incidents to the regulator’s Sports Betting Intelligence Unit (SBIU) in 2023, down from 40 referrals the year before. Rather, it points to a possible ignorance on the part of operators about how critical it is to report suspicious activity right away.

Challenges in Reporting

The drop in alerts occurred despite the introduction of two new reporting categories—”offering banned betting options” and “offering bets on potentially risky matches.” While external parties such as investigative agencies, ministries, and overseas supervisors continued to report suspicious activities, licensed operators appeared less proactive.

External sources, including the Group of Copenhagen, sent a significant number of alerts to the SBIU in 2023, indicating sustained vigilance against sports manipulation. However, the KSA emphasized that the decrease in reports from licensed operators did not necessarily reflect a reduced risk of match-fixing connected to gambling.

The KSA emphasized how crucial it is to educate licensed operators about their legal duty to swiftly disclose any signs of elevated manipulation risk. Although the organization is not legally obligated to detect match-fixing, it is vital in guaranteeing that licensed operators maintain preventive measures.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, an autonomous regulating organization, is committed to protecting the integrity of the gaming sector. The decrease in match-fixing warnings that have been recorded presents difficulties, but it also emphasizes the continued need for preventative actions and increased awareness among all parties involved.
