While Mike Tyson may not have claimed victory in his latest bout against Jake Paul, the fight generated an unprecedented surge in sports betting, setting new records for major sportsbooks.
BetMGM reported that the Tyson-Paul matchup resulted in three times the betting activity and four times the money wagered compared to any other combat sports event in its history. The fight quickly became the most-wagered event for both mixed martial arts and boxing on the platform.
A large portion of the betting action came from prop bets. Tyson fans placed wagers predicting that the boxing legend, despite his age, would secure a victory through knockout, decision, or even a first-round KO. These bets highlighted the intense nostalgia and excitement surrounding Tyson’s return to the ring, as he took on Paul in what many saw as a generational showdown.
BetMGM was not alone in witnessing record-breaking betting on the event. DraftKings also reported a major surge, with Sports Operations Director Johnny Avello telling the Associated Press, “The bettors were yearning for Tyson to return to the ring even at 58 years old and wanted to be a part of this moment with one of the icons of the sport.” He further noted that Paul’s matches continue to draw massive interest, adding, “We’ll see who Jake Paul fights next, but his matches have proven to create immense buzz and unprecedented action on our platforms.”
Caesars Sportsbook also experienced significant betting volume, with VP of Trading Craig Mucklow commenting that Paul’s unanimous victory generated interest “on par” with an NFL Monday night game. “We knew there would be tremendous interest in the fight, as the betting suggested it was a generational matchup in customer demographics,” Mucklow said. He highlighted how Tyson’s return appealed to fans who remembered his prime, while newer fans sided with Jake Paul, creating a perfect storm of betting activity.
