Share

Fantasy Life is stepping into a new phase of growth with a $7 million seed funding round, aiming to level up its fantasy sports offerings. The company, launched in 2020 by longtime NBC Sports analyst Matthew Berry, will use the funds to support the rollout of its Fantasy Hub platform and finalize its acquisition of Guillotine League.

Good to know

  • The seed round was co-led by LRMR Ventures and SC Holdings.
  • Guillotine Leagues, now part of Fantasy Life, eliminate the lowest-scoring team weekly.
  • Fantasy Hub will let users manage multiple leagues and access real-time insights.

Berry called the venture a natural extension of his years in fantasy sports, saying:

“My entire adult life has been about helping fantasy players and sports gamers win, have more fun, and make this industry better. Fantasy Life is the culmination of my decades of experience — a destination for every kind of player, from beginner to sharp.”

Fantasy Life’s new platform, Fantasy Hub, will serve as a customizable dashboard for users to track player updates, real-time stats, league data, and even a synced scoreboard across different leagues. It is built to offer tools tailored to both newcomers and fantasy veterans.

In August 2024, the company took over Guillotine League, a unique game format where each week, the team with the fewest points is removed from the competition. The last team standing wins, creating a survival-style format that has been picking up traction in fantasy circles.

The funding round brought in some high-profile backers. LRMR Ventures, the investment firm run by NBA legend LeBron James and his business partner Maverick Carter, helped lead the round. SC Holdings also played a major role, with Co-CEO Jason Stein backing the project. Other investors included Miami Marlins Co-Owner Roger Ehrenberg, YouTube Co-Founder Chad Hurley, and Jacksonville Jaguars Owner Tony Khan.

Carter explained the group’s interest, saying:

“We’re always looking for opportunities to invest in smart, creative people and businesses that share our values. What Matthew, Eliot and the team are building with Fantasy Life hits on everything we look for.”

He added:

“Their strong brand, incredible growth and the market size of sports gaming make for a compelling opportunity. As an avid fantasy football and Guillotine League player myself, this is a tech-forward play that we believe will be a game changer for fantasy sports and we’re proud to co-lead this round with our partners at SC Holdings.”

Berry expressed excitement about the backing:

“With smart, personalized tools, entertaining content and the best damn fantasy game ever in Guillotine Leagues, we’re building a platform as obsessed with fantasy as we are.”
