Critics Urge Closure of Arbitrum’s $220 Million Gaming Initiative

At the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2025, Arbitrum, a significant web3 ecosystem, demonstrated its impact by presenting its 2024 Transparency Report. According to the report, 276 initiatives received funds from the Arbitrum Foundation in the previous 12 months.

FinTech and DeFi projects received the majority of the cash. But there was also a lot of support for the “Others” and “Gaming” categories, which received 51 and 44 grants, respectively. According to the research, Arbitrum has emerged as the “leading hub for gaming blockchains,” thanks to inventions like Boss Chains and Proof of Play’s Apex, which both make use of its L3 rollups.

Game Catalyst Program Faces Scrutiny

While the ecosystem saw positive growth, concerns remain about the Game Catalyst Program (GCP). Launched in March 2024 and approved by ARB token holders in June, the GCP allocated approximately $220 million in tokens to stimulate blockchain gaming over three years. However, uncertainties emerged after Treasure DAO, a primary backer of the GCP, exited Arbitrum in favor of zkSync.

By October 2024, doubts about the program’s effectiveness led Joseph Schiarizzi, a member of the Arbitrum DAO, to propose reallocating the remaining 220 million ARB tokens back to the DAO treasury. Criticizing the GCP’s lack of milestone achievements, Schiarizzi described the initiative as “unconscionable.”

In defense of the GCP, Offchain Labs director A.J. Warner dismissed the criticism, stating it “makes no sense.” However, ongoing concerns are amplified by the 77% decline in ARB token prices over the last year.

As confidence in the GCP continues to erode, some DAO members, including Nathan Van der Hayden, are urging a complete shutdown. He argued: “The GCP was created in overly optimistic times. With key backers now gone, it’s clear the program isn’t delivering on its promises. It’s time to cut our losses and secure the treasury. We call on all delegates to support this proposal to wind down GCP responsibly.”

With both supporters and critics of the GCP voicing strong opinions, the future of Arbitrum’s gaming ambitions remains uncertain. The upcoming months will likely determine whether the GCP continues or if the funds are redirected to stabilize the ecosystem.
