BlizzCon 2024 Takes a Break to Push Gamescom & Other Shows

Share

The video game behemoth that created Overwatch and World of Warcraft, Blizzard Entertainment, has announced that it would be canceling BlizzCon 2024, marking a dramatic break from convention. With this decision, the event will be canceled for the sixth time in its history. The most recent cancellations happened in 2020 and 2022 as a result of the COVID-19 epidemic and legal concerns pertaining to claims of workplace harassment, respectively.

BlizzCon, renowned for its extravagant showcases and community engagement, has long been a highlight on the gaming industry calendar. However, amidst rising costs and evolving audience expectations, Blizzard has opted to explore alternative approaches to connecting with its fanbase. In a statement, the company expressed its commitment to bringing BlizzCon back in future years, highlighting the event’s significance to both developers and players alike.

“After careful consideration over the last year, we at Blizzard have made the decision not to hold BlizzCon in 2024. This decision was not made lightly as BlizzCon remains a very special event for all of us, and we know many of you look forward to it. While we’re approaching this year differently and as we have explored different event formats in the past, rest assured that we are just as excited as ever to bring BlizzCon back in future years,” said a spokesperson for Blizzard.

The Future of BlizzCon

Though BlizzCon may be on indefinite hiatus, enthusiasts may find comfort in the knowledge that it will return. Nearing the 20th anniversary of the event, Blizzard teases big plans for the showcase, implying that the essence of BlizzCon will live on even in its temporary absence. While waiting, the community may unite and celebrate their mutual love of Blizzard’s games at other events like the Overwatch Champions Series and the Warcraft anniversary festivities.
