Manchester United, a storied name in the Premier League, has introduced a new web3 fantasy soccer game called Fantasy United. This launch is paired with a range of collectible NFTs for the 2024/25 season.
Manchester United’s new NFT cards, covering all first-team male players, are available in three editions: Classic, Rare, and Ultra-Rare. These digital cards will evolve throughout the season based on players’ real-time performance metrics, such as goals, assists, tackles, and saves. This dynamic update feature promises to keep fans engaged with the latest stats and developments.
Fantasy United allows participants to build five-man squads using these NFT cards. Players accumulate points based on their chosen players’ performance in mini-leagues throughout the season. The game kicks off with the Premier League opener against Fulham on August 16th.
Powered by the Tezos blockchain, Fantasy United extends Manchester United’s ongoing partnership with Tezos. This collaboration began with the launch of The Devils collection in 2022, consisting of 7,777 NFTs. While holders of The Devils NFTs had early access starting July 31, the game is now available to all fans.
Fans can buy player packs, each containing seven cards, for £3 ($4). Additionally, individual cards are available through Tezos’ secondary marketplace, Objkt. This flexible purchasing option ensures fans can engage with Fantasy United in a way that suits their preferences.
Ronan Joyce, Manchester United’s director of digital innovation, highlighted the excitement around the new collectibles. “Player Trading Cards allows United fans to collect the whole men’s first team squad, to see those collectibles evolve throughout the season as games are played and goals are scored, and have the ability to play those cards in an exciting fantasy football game.”
Sunil Singhvi, head of culture at Trilitech, echoed this enthusiasm, stating, “Player Trading Cards and Fantasy United is an innovative use of blockchain technology to enable United fans to have a deeper connection with their favorite club. Through dynamically updating collectibles, supporters will be able to cheer on their heroes and watch how the season develops.”
