Illuvium has announced a major restructuring to reduce expenses and extend its operational lifespan. This decision aligns with a broader shift in development, as the company focuses on transforming its flagship title, Overworld, into an MMO Lite later this year.
Co-founder Kieran Warwick revealed on X that Illuvium aims to bring its monthly burn rate below $500,000 by March. To achieve this, the team has implemented budget cuts, salary reductions, and an alternative payment option where some employees receive ILV tokens instead of USDC. These measures aim to maintain financial stability while ensuring continued game development.
Warwick acknowledged the challenges of this restructuring, particularly as it impacted long-time team members. He expressed appreciation for their contributions, calling them a “huge asset” to any studio they join next.
This move mirrors Illuvium’s early days when a smaller team of under 50 developers made significant progress. Warwick believes a leaner approach will help the company ship high-quality games at a faster pace.
The company has been actively cutting costs since 2024, successfully reducing monthly expenses from a much higher figure to $900,000. Measures such as eliminating administrative salaries and trimming wages by $85,000 contributed to this effort. However, Illuvium still requires additional funding by March 2025 to fully complete its Overworld MMO Lite project.
Overworld’s shift into an MMO Lite marks a major change for the game. Announced in December 2024, the transformation will introduce multiplayer elements while keeping the game accessible. Players can expect an expansive world, Illuvial hunts, character progression, and large-scale battles.
Illuvium is also integrating AI-driven NPCs through a partnership with Virtuals Protocol. These characters will enhance gameplay with interactive storylines and personalized quests, making the world more immersive.
As Illuvium moves forward, these changes will define the studio’s future. Whether the cost-cutting efforts are enough remains to be seen, but the focus is now firmly on Overworld’s ambitious transformation.
