IGN has laid off eight unionized staff members from its Creators Guild, representing about 12% of the bargaining unit, despite a strong performance year so far. The cuts came alongside similar layoffs at IGN’s sister company, Ziff Davis Creators Guild, which saw 15% of its union membership let go. Both actions followed a company-wide buyout initiative by parent firm Ziff Davis, which was originally positioned as an effort to avoid forced layoffs.

In a public statement, the IGN Creators Guild expressed frustration and confusion over the decision. It pointed out that the company had repeatedly praised the team’s contributions during a highly successful year, highlighting their roles in major livestreams and events. The Guild suggested that the layoffs targeted those whose work was essential to IGN’s competitiveness—particularly in an era where AI-driven content is increasingly prevalent.
The statement emphasized that the creators affected were producing the very type of content IGN said was vital to resist AI content replication — including expert analysis, original reporting, and deep knowledge of gaming and tech culture. The Guild argued the decision undercuts IGN’s own strategy for maintaining relevance.
“While IGN Entertainment management may not value us, we value one another and the incredible work we can do together. […] Without us, there is no IGN,” the union said in its statement.
The IGN Creators Guild is a union representing editorial and creative professionals across IGN’s digital platforms. The layoffs now raise questions about the company’s direction at a time when human-driven content is seen as a differentiator in the face of rapidly expanding generative AI.
