The new desktop client from Decentraland, the first decentralized virtual social realm, has been formally released. With better performance and a more immersive setting, this beta edition offers a substantial improvement in the user experience. Decentraland paves the path for next developments and creator tools by abandoning the browser-based platform.
This new desktop client replaces the traditional browser experience with a robust, Unity-powered platform. It is designed to facilitate Decentraland’s vision of an interconnected metaverse. Yemel Jardi, Executive Director of the Decentraland Foundation, remarked, “Today marks a new chapter for Decentraland. As virtual worlds take on a larger role in digital life, Decentraland is committed to creating a virtual world where people, not corporations, own their digital lives.”
The desktop client aims to empower users through decentralization, moving away from conventional platforms that often limit real ownership. Jardi emphasized the need for a user-driven digital space, highlighting the potential of the open metaverse. He stated, “This next chapter is about unlocking the true potential of the open metaverse, ensuring that as the digital world grows, it remains user-driven, community-focused, and grounded in open standards.”
The new desktop client offers several exciting features:
With the launch of this desktop client, Decentraland is preparing for future expansions into virtual reality (VR) and mobile platforms. Kim Currier, Head of Partnerships and Marketing at Decentraland, noted, “This upgraded desktop client transforms how people experience Decentraland. For our community, it’s about more than just faster load times and smoother interactions—it’s about creating a beautiful, vibrant space where people can genuinely connect.”
The new Creator Hub will further support this vision, offering creators tools to build and engage audiences in innovative ways. Users can now experience an interactive digital environment by downloading the new desktop client, available on both Mac and Windows.
