The Sandbox has introduced an innovative program called “Voxel Games,” designed to empower indie developers and studios. This initiative invites creators to design voxel-style games using popular engines such as Unity, Unreal, and HTML5. With Voxel Games, developers can build games beyond The Sandbox ecosystem, reaching wider audiences on platforms like PC, mobile, and the web.
The program aims to enhance the creative potential of indie studios, offering them the chance to use advanced tools while maintaining The Sandbox’s signature voxel aesthetic.
Unlike The Sandbox’s previous no-code tools like VoxEdit and Game Maker, Voxel Games now allows experienced developers to use more powerful game engines. This shift opens the door for indie studios to create more complex games. Additionally, these games are not limited to The Sandbox; they can be released on other platforms and stores, giving creators more freedom to distribute their projects.
Sebastien Borget, COO and Co-Founder of The Sandbox, shared his excitement: “This is an exciting opportunity to realize our vision of the metaverse, where players can acquire, own, and use their digital assets across multiple games and platforms–beyond The Sandbox.” The program aligns with The Sandbox’s broader goal of an Open Metaverse, giving users more control over their assets.
The Voxel Games program offers numerous benefits for indie developers. They gain access to The Sandbox’s large community, which includes over 6 million user accounts, 25,000 LAND owners, and 290,000 SAND token holders. Additionally, developers can leverage partnerships with brands like Warner Music, Snoop Dogg, and The Walking Dead.
FRAG Games’ CEO Ali Ihsan emphasized the program’s impact: “FRAG Games believes in The Sandbox’s vision that the metaverse should exist for shared experiences, unbound by any single platform. The next generation of ‘metaverse games’ will be just ‘games.'”
Currently, the program is available by referral, but it’s expected to expand as more creators join. The first wave of games is set to launch in 2025, signaling a new era for voxel-style games across various platforms.
