Telegram, a popular messaging platform, is set to launch a mini-app store featuring support for web3 pages. Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO, shared this news on his Telegram channel.
Durov stated, “We’re proud that Telegram is at the epicenter of this societal transformation. To keep the fire going, this month, we will introduce a mini app store and an in-app browser with support for Web3-pages.”
Previously, Telegram was linked with the layer-1 blockchain Toncoin (TON). However, the partnership ended in 2020 after a legal dispute with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Since then, The Open Network, an open-source developer community, has managed the technology.
These mini-apps will operate within Telegram and support payments through 20 different providers. According to Durov, 2024 will be marked as the year when “hundreds of millions of people became familiar with blockchain.”
Telegram aims to increase efforts to combat scammers targeting new crypto users. Soon, the platform will display the month of registration and the principal country for public accounts, similar to Instagram. Organizations will also be able to issue labels for channels using their mini-apps, creating a decentralized marketplace for third-party verification.
With these changes, Telegram users will gain more transparency and awareness about the opportunities and risks in the blockchain world.
Despite the split, TON can still be sent by Telegram’s 900 million users within the platform without needing long wallet addresses.
