The well-known messaging software Telegram is expanding remarkably, partly due to a surge in gaming activity on the network. Telegram’s CEO and founder, Pavel Durov, revealed that the platform now has 950 million active monthly users. Compared to the 900 million users estimated earlier in the spring, this is a huge gain. According to Durov’s declaration on Monday, the network is almost certainly going to surpass the milestone of one billion users.
A key factor in this surge is the rising popularity of crypto games on Telegram. The platform’s growth has been fueled by the launch of The Open Network (TON), a blockchain initiative originally developed by Telegram. Although Telegram abandoned the project in 2020 due to regulatory issues, a community of external developers revived it, leading to substantial interest.
The gaming craze began with Notcoin, a tap-to-earn game that captivated millions with its promise of substantial in-game rewards. Notcoin allowed players to accumulate virtual coins with the hope of eventually converting them into crypto tokens. By May, players could exchange their earnings for NOT tokens on the TON blockchain. Supported by major exchanges like Binance and OKX, the NOT token launch became one of the year’s most significant gaming token events. TON’s market cap now stands at $17 billion, ranking it as the 10th largest cryptocurrency.
Hamster Kombat became a significant force in the game industry after Notcoin. With a lighthearted twist including cute hamsters and a similar tap-to-earn mechanism, Hamster Kombat immediately gained international attention. By June, the game had 100 million players, and it was receiving a lot of attention from other sources, including the Iranian government, which was worried that the popularity of the game would divert people’s attention away from current political events.
According to Durov’s research earlier this month, there were 239 million users of Hamster Kombat. The game has apparently attracted more than 250 million users since then, cementing its position as “the fastest-growing digital service in the world.”
