Splinterlands, the blockchain-based trading card game, is launching a new ranked gameplay format, Survival Mode. Designed to reshape gameplay and economics, this mode stands apart from the existing Modern and Wild formats. Announced on November 22nd, its first iteration is set to launch in early 2025.
Unlike traditional formats, Survival Mode allows players to battle without energy costs but introduces a twist: cards used in battles have a cooldown period. During this cooldown, cards become temporarily unavailable unless revived with a new item, Revival Potions. These potions will be purchasable using DEC, Credits, or Glint.
Survival Mode emphasizes collection management, shifting strategies from owning high-level cards to acquiring multiple copies of key cards. This encourages players to diversify their decks and adapt to the mode’s unique mechanics.
The game rewards players through a substantial $SPS token pool, mirroring the prize structures of existing formats. Winners will earn tokens based on reward shares, with leaderboard prizes also available at the end of each season. Initially, the studio will fund rewards, but successful adoption could lead to governance-approved funding from the DAO or SPS inflation.
Developers also plan to add Glint rewards, ensuring fair distribution as the format matures. These updates position Survival Mode as an innovative step in blockchain gaming, offering fresh challenges and a new layer of strategic depth.
