The company behind the Sui blockchain, Mysten Labs, is getting ready to launch the SuiPlay0X1, a cutting-edge handheld gaming gadget that will completely transform the gaming market. The SuiPlay0X1, which debuted on September 3, is the first game console to use blockchain technology directly. The device is on preorder for $599, with delivery expected in the first half of 2025.
Adeniyi Abiodun, co-founder of Mysten Labs, highlighted the significance of the device: “At the end of the day, gamers don’t care what tech is powering a game.” He emphasized that the SuiPlay0X1 would demonstrate how blockchain technology can enhance the gaming experience without compromising on quality or enjoyment. According to Abiodun, “The SuiPlay0X1 will showcase that games seamlessly incorporating blockchain technology look and feel no different than traditional ‘Web2’ games.” He added that this integration would offer a “deeper and more engaging gaming experience” through player ownership enabled by blockchain.
The SuiPlay0X1 boasts impressive specifications for its size. Weighing 677 grams, it features an integrated graphics processing unit and operates on Playtron GameOS, a Linux-based system capable of running many AAA PC games with no need for modification. The device will support blockchain-powered games such as the third-person shooter XOCIETY and the Nordic-themed medieval brawler DARKTIMES.
Mysten Labs, founded by four former Meta executives in 2021, first revealed its plans for this handheld gaming console during a Sui Basecamp event in Paris earlier this year. The SuiPlay0X1 joins a competitive market of handheld gaming PCs, including Valve’s Steam Deck, the Asus ROG Ally X, and the Lenovo Legion Go.
According to Omidia, global sales of handheld gaming devices reached 19.3 million units in 2023, with projections to rise to 29.3 million by 2028. The SuiPlay0X1 is poised to capture a share of this expanding market. Preorders can be made using Sui (SUI), Ether (ETH), or Solana (SOL), reflecting the device’s integration with blockchain technology. Mysten Labs reported over 1,000 preorders within 12 hours of the announcement, signaling strong interest and enthusiasm from the gaming community.
