After a fierce battle at the China Hangzhou Esports Centre, Korea claimed the League of Legends gold medal during the Hangzhou Asian Games. They demonstrated superior skills, particularly when they took on Chinese Taipei in the final round.
League of Legends made its debut as an official medal event this year at the Asian Games. With seven esports titles in total, 15 teams entered the fray for the coveted gold medal in this discipline.
South Korea and China, being the frontrunners, were expected to clash for the title. However, a twist in scheduling pinned them against each other in the semifinals. South Korea displayed unmatched prowess, sealing their win against China in just two games. Following this triumph, the path was clear, and they further asserted their dominance with another 2-0 win against Chinese Taipei.
An added incentive for the winning team from South Korea was the exemption from mandatory military service. This service, compulsory for South Korean men by the age of 28, lasts 18 months. This regulation has seen its impact even on global stars like the members of BTS, with Suga commencing his service recently on September 22. However, with this win, Zeus, Kanavi, Faker, Chovy, Ruler, and Keria can set aside those military blues and continue focusing on their esports journey.
Meanwhile, after their loss to Korea, China locked horns with Vietnam for the bronze. Expected to be a straightforward victory for China, Vietnam threw a curveball by securing the first game. However, thanks to a strategic switch involving BLG’s jungler Xun, China rallied back and clinched the bronze.
Following these intense competitions, players can enjoy a brief respite. But, come October 10, all eyes will be on South Korea again for Worlds 2023.
