Just before the 2024 Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved a ground-breaking project, marking a significant milestone. The proposal to introduce the Olympic Esports Games by the IOC Executive Board has received official approval. The IOC is demonstrating its commitment to incorporating esports into the Olympic movement by taking this significant step.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Saudi Arabia have forged a 12-year relationship, building on the triumph of the previous year’s Olympic Esports Week in Singapore. Through this partnership, the Olympic Esports Games will take place in the Kingdom for the following three years. Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which aspires to increase its footprint in international sports and entertainment, is in line with this calculated approach.
Details regarding the city and venue for the inaugural Olympic Esports Games are still pending. The IOC Esports Commission, led by IOC Member David Lappartient and including notable esports figures such as G2 CEO Alban Dechelotte, will spearhead the selection process. The goal is to identify a location that embodies the Olympic values while appealing to the esports community.
IOC President Thomas Bach emphasized, “This is truly a new era for the IOC. With the confirmation by the IOC Session of the creation of the Olympic Esports Games, we are keeping up with the pace of the digital revolution.” The partnership with Saudi Arabia is expected to bring unique insights and experiences to the project, further strengthening the Olympic brand among younger audiences.
Saudi Arabia’s investment in esports and its role in hosting the inaugural Esports World Cup highlight the country’s growing influence in the industry. The Kingdom’s efforts are part of Vision 2030, aiming to diversify its economy and cultural landscape.
