Disney has entered into a $1.5 billion partnership with Epic Games, known for developing Fortnite and Unreal Engine, to blend Disney’s iconic franchises, such as Marvel and Star Wars, with Epic’s virtual worlds. This collaboration signals Disney’s largest venture into the gaming industry, aiming to create a unified gaming and entertainment experience.
During a recent analyst call, Disney CEO Robert Iger discussed the partnership as a strategic move to engage audiences in novel ways with its stories, even after Disney scaled back its metaverse project in 2023. This new initiative seeks to combine the narrative depth of Disney’s characters with the interactive platforms of Epic Games.
The partnership envisions an “open games and entertainment universe” that would allow for immersive interactions with Disney’s extensive character lineup within the dynamic settings of Fortnite. A teaser for this collaboration has already sparked excitement among fans, hinting at the integration of familiar Disney faces in interactive gameplay.
Before this vision becomes a reality, the deal must pass regulatory approvals and fulfill standard closing conditions. Both Disney and Epic Games are confident in their ability to address these challenges and launch a new phase of interactive entertainment.
Tim Sweeney, CEO and Founder of Epic Games, shared his enthusiasm for the deepening partnership with Disney. He mentioned Disney’s early adoption of integrating their stories with Fortnite and using Unreal Engine technology in various projects. Together, they aim to create a “persistent, open, and interoperable ecosystem,” potentially transforming the way stories are told and experienced digitally.
