After creating a specialized game publishing department under the direction of seasoned industry veteran Chen Tongpeng, Chinese entertainment behemoth Bilibili made a big change in the gaming space. Under the direct supervision of CEO Chen Rui, this reorganization intends to improve Bilibili’s standing in the gaming sector and optimize processes.
Chen Tongpeng offers a plethora of experience to his new position, having worked for over 13 years at prestigious organizations including as Tencent, CMGE, and MiHoYo. Among other things, he managed the triumphant Tower of Fantasy launch while leading efforts at Tencent’s Level Infinite.
Initially, Bilibili operated six internal studios for game development. However, in a strategic move in November 2022, the company consolidated these units under direct CEO control. This consolidation signals a shift towards a more focused approach, with the company now concentrating on the development of two flagship games, rather than dispersing resources across multiple projects.
Bilibili’s gaming division has faced challenges in securing breakout hits beyond its established titles like Fate/Grand Order and Azur Lane. Notably, these successful titles were not internally developed. Furthermore, Bilibili reduced its investments in external gaming companies over the past year, indicating a strategic refocus on internal development.
Core self-developed titles will be promoted and improved as a result of the restructure, which is set to enable greater integration of development and operational resources. Bilibili wants to put itself in a better position to succeed in the cutthroat gaming industry by pooling resources and focusing on a small number of projects.
With this strategic change, Bilibili is demonstrating its dedication to development and innovation and embarking on a new phase in its gaming adventure. Bilibili is well-positioned to achieve noteworthy advancements in the gaming sector with an experienced CEO at the helm and a focused focus on internal growth.
