MixRift, a pioneering mixed reality (MR) gaming start-up, has successfully raised USD$1.6 million in a pre-seed investment round. Key investors, including Outsized Ventures, Underline Ventures, and SOSV, led the funding. This significant backing will accelerate MixRift’s efforts to develop and publish cutting-edge mixed reality titles.
The emergence of headsets like Meta Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro has spurred interest in mixed reality. Despite Meta reportedly selling over 20 million Quest headsets, there remains a scarcity of compelling MR content.
MixRift stands out with its unique approach to game development, focusing on creating immersive yet easily accessible games. The company believes that mixed reality, with wearables functioning as advanced computing devices, will attract a broader audience.
The MixRift team comprises industry veterans Bobby Voicu, David Pripas, and Andrei Vaduva. Voicu, a serial entrepreneur and XR influencer, previously launched the mobile game studio Mavenhut. Pripas, a gaming influencer and official Meta AR Partner, serves as MixRift’s CPO, while Vaduva is the CTO.
Voicu, MixRift’s CEO, emphasized, “We’re at the very beginning of what mixed reality could do for gamers. We know there is a huge untapped market, and our founding team knows what it takes to create the games that hook those players in. This puts us in a unique position to capitalise on the opportunity.”
MixRift plans to utilize the investment to advance its game development and release new titles later in 2024. The company’s strategy focuses on refining game mechanics to quickly identify what resonates with users.
Voicu elaborated, “We are committed to rapidly prototyping games, getting them into the market, and gathering real user feedback as quickly as possible. We use those insights to improve titles that connect with audiences and replace those that don’t. This investment gives us the support we need to take that approach and demonstrates experienced, knowledgeable backers’ buy-in to our philosophy.”
Outsized Ventures and Underline Ventures co-led the funding round, with additional support from SOSV and several angel investors. Lomax Ward at Outsized Ventures remarked, “Mixed reality has immense potential, demonstrated by the likes of Meta and Apple committing heavily to the sector. MixRift’s founding team has deep knowledge and experience, positioning the company to take advantage of both the demand from players and the growing interest in MR. We are pleased to be backing the team as MixRift grows.”
Currently, MixRift’s games “Fractured” and “Hell Horde” are available on the Meta Quest store, with “Fractured” also accessible on the App Store for Apple Vision Pro.
