The classic Ethereum NFT project CryptoKitties is making a comeback, this time in a new form as a game on Telegram. This marks the first official product launch under the CryptoKitties brand since the original NFT collection’s debut in 2017. The new game also serves as a preview of the planned CryptoKitties relaunch on Flow.
Dapper Labs, the creator of CryptoKitties, has focused on expanding its portfolio in recent years, developing licensed crypto products such as NBA Top Shot, NFL All Day, and Disney Pinnacle. However, with the recent surge in popularity of Telegram gaming, Dapper Labs decided to revisit the CryptoKitties intellectual property.
Originally launched as the first NFTs minted using Ethereum’s ERC-721 token standard, CryptoKitties became hugely popular, at one point accounting for 13% of all transactions on the Ethereum network. Players would buy Kitties, breed them, and create new virtual pets.
The popularity of Telegram gaming exploded in 2024, with games like Hamster Kombat attracting over 300 million players and Notcoin launching the biggest gaming token of the year. Many other projects, including a version of Flappy Bird, have also joined the trend. Now, the makers of CryptoKitties are seizing the opportunity with the launch of “All The Zen,” a mini app for Telegram.
All The Zen follows the familiar screen-tapping style that has driven much of Telegram gaming’s success. Players will hatch eggs to birth Kitties, producing “Zen,” which can then be used for in-game upgrades. Progress in the Telegram game will also unlock airdrops related to CryptoKitties on the Flow network. This new “play-to-eggdrop” model is a variation on the popular tap-to-earn and play-to-airdrop concepts that have fueled the Telegram gaming boom.
The game will give players a sneak peek of what to expect from CryptoKitties’ full relaunch on Flow, a move that has been anticipated since 2020 but was delayed as Dapper Labs focused on projects like NBA Top Shot. This full relaunch will dive deeper into the CryptoKitties lore, where players will try to hatch the “ReGenesis Kitty” from an egg to bring a new era of joy.
