Apple now manufactures about a quarter of its iPhones in India, according to a report from Bloomberg. The development reflects a long term strategy aimed at reducing production reliance on China while expanding manufacturing across several countries.
The milestone also matches a forecast from JPMorgan during 2022 that predicted Apple would shift a large share of its iPhone production to India.
Good to Know
Global iPhone production ranges between 220 million and 230 million units annually. About 55 million of those devices were manufactured in India during the past year.
Apple also increased manufacturing commitments by producing the entire iPhone 17 lineup in India ahead of its launch last September.
Chief executive Tim Cook said most iPhones sold in the United States now come from production facilities in India.
The shift accelerated during 2025 as Apple faced uncertainty around trade conditions connected to tariffs between the United States and China.
Those risks pushed the company to distribute manufacturing across multiple countries instead of relying heavily on Chinese production.
The geopolitical impact became visible when President Donald Trump publicly warned Cook against expanding further in India during a business summit in Doha earlier this year.
Diversifying manufacturing locations remains part of Apple long term supply chain strategy as technology companies seek to reduce exposure to geopolitical risk.
India now plays another role for Apple beyond manufacturing.
The country has become one of the fastest growing markets for iPhone sales. Research firm Counterpoint reported shipments of about 14 million iPhones in India last year, representing nine percent annual growth.
Total iPhone sales in the country exceeded $9 billion during the same period, according to Bloomberg.
Apple continues expanding its retail presence there as well. The company opened its sixth retail store in India last month.
Apple is also reportedly discussing the launch of Apple Pay in the country during the coming year, which would add another part to the company ecosystem in the growing Indian smartphone market.
