Woodbine Casino Locks Out Nearly 1,000 Workers after Contract Dispute

Share

Woodbine Casino has locked out almost 1,000 employees following their decision to reject the most recent contract offer from One Toronto Gaming. The workers’ dismissal has led to protests and a lockout that began at 12:01 a.m. on Monday. The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), representing the casino workers, is now facing the consequences of the lockout.

Casino Woodbine reported that discussions with PSAC continued until late Sunday night, and additional improvements were offered but not presented to the members. The impact of the lockout on the casino’s operations remains uncertain.

As for resuming negotiations, Lagakos stated that the decision lies with the employer. The workers will continue to wait until the management decides to change its stance and return to the negotiation table.

Details of the Contract Offer

In a statement released earlier this week, Woodbine Casino explained the details of the agreement proposed to PSAC’s bargaining committee. The offer included a 16% wage increase over four years, market adjustments in wages for specific roles, a $1,000 signing bonus for full-time employees, a $500 bonus for part-time workers, and significant improvements in benefits.

Worker Concerns and Demands

Theo Lagakos, local president for PSAC DCL 533 Casino Woodbine, stated that the dispute primarily revolves around the rights of part-time workers. According to Lagakos, 50% of the workforce at the casino is part-time, and these workers are seeking a guarantee of at least three shifts per week to maintain their standard of living. However, the casino management has been unwilling to commit to this demand, leaving the workers feeling that their jobs are precarious.
